Hobby Car was established in 2014 in collaboration with CAF/Dong Feng Siao Kang (DFSK) China, a truck manufacturing company in China for the brand DFSK. In 2017, in cooperation with the Fire & Rescue Department of Malaysia, Hobby Car completed guidelines to govern food trucks in Malaysia. This guideline is aimed to ensure the safety of the food trucks, operators and consumers. Now, the guideline has been tabulated and approved by the Road Safety Department of Malaysia and shall be implemented nationwide by this year.
Food trucks in Malaysia aren’t governed by proper guidelines in terms of their design. This caused a severe hazard to the operators and also to the consumers. Without proper guidelines and governance, food truck operators are not protected and insured properly. Numerous accidents and incidents involving food trucks, even causing injuries.
For food truck operators, they face various difficulties to obtain a licence and permit to operate their food truck business. They also lack the know-how to go around obtaining all the required documents to operate the business. On top of that, they lack the business know-how to launch a food truck business.
Hobby Car serves as a one-stop service centre to cover all services required to start operating a food truck business.
Hobby Car assists food truck operators in designing Bomba-compliant trucks. With the tabulation and approval of the guidelines drafted by Hobby Car, Hobby Car works closely with the Fire & Rescue Department and Road Safety Department of Malaysia to ensure all food trucks on the roads adhere to the guidelines.
We provide leasing models to our operators. That means operators can own a truck without forking out the down payment, but only a monthly amount. We also charge them a monthly administration fee and quarterly maintenance fee as the trucks are sent back to us for maintenance plus inspection.
The food truck business in Malaysia showed rapid development in the past few years (https://ir.uitm.edu.my/id/eprint/66081/1/66081.pdf), especially in the local night market.
The night market is a favourite local food place not only in urban areas but also in villages. In Peninsula Malaysia alone, there are 9,755 villages (Source: https://www.theedgemarkets.com/article/my-say-pasar-malam-and-five-year-plans). Each village will have a small-scale night market with traders who have their own customised food trucks selling at the markets. The number of privately owned customized food trucks in urban areas is potentially higher corresponding to 2 factors - the extensive size of the night markets and special locations & places for food truck businesses such as “Tapak” at KLCC, Putrajaya, Cyberjaya and Bukit Bintang.
With the implementation of the guidelines by the Road Safety Department of Malaysia, all customised trucks be it food trucks or camper vans; as long as there is electrical wiring; will be required to be modified to adhere to the guidelines.
This gives us the opportunity to capture a huge market that will require modification to the food truck bodies. Due to the growing demand for food trucks among Malaysians, there will also be a growing need for trucks on top of what we already have in Malaysia.

We will be working closely with various organisations, bodies and associations in Malaysia where we will offer the leasing model food truck business opportunity to the members. FUTURE EXPANSION
The leasing model of customized trucks is one of the revenue channels. After the official launch and implementation of the guidelines nationwide by the Road Safety Department, Hobby Car will be preparing to tap into the customized truck market nationwide.
In 2017, Hobby Car in cooperation with the Fire & Rescue Department of Malaysia completed the guidelines governing food trucks in Malaysia to ensure the safety of food truck operators and customers.
After 4 years, the guidelines have been tabulated, accepted and approved by Road Safety Department Malaysia and were launched in February 2023.
In 2022, Hobby Car launched the truck customization service and started working with various brands to customize 200 food trucks following the guidelines created.
With our lean team and efficient setup, Hobby Car will turn profitable 6 months after the first food truck is leased out by following the target below in terms of the number of new food trucks leased out per year:
Year | Q4 2023 | 2024 | 2025 |
---|---|---|---|
New food trucks leased our per year | 25 | 101 | 73 |
This financial forecast is a very conservative forecast as it is based on the assumption there are no new food trucks being leased out after 2025 and that the revenue is maintained. At the same time, another conservative calculation is the fact that all food trucks are serviced with hire purchase loans. Having a smaller amount of loan will allow the company to break even faster.
